Nasim Nuñez developed his game through MLB’s youth development programs such as the Breakthrough Series and Hank Aaron Invitational -- helping shape his path to the Major Leagues and allowing him to see firsthand how access to developmental opportunities can make a lasting impact on a young athlete's future.
Today, many scholar athletes at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy participate in the same developmental programs that helped influence Nasim's own journey. That shared experience gives him a unique and authentic connection to the young people participating in year-round youth development programs at the Academy. When Nasim visits the Academy, he does so not only as a Major League player -- but as someone with a unique understanding of the confidence, exposure and support those programs can provide.
Nasim has been an active presence at the Academy throughout his time with the Nationals. In 2024, he helped spread joy at the Academy's annual holiday gift drive, distributing gifts and creating meaningful memories for scholar athletes and their families. Over multiple years he has also joined teammates on annual visits to the Academy’s summer program, connecting with youth through both on-field instruction and classroom activities.
In the spring, Nasim participated in the Academy's 2026 graduation ceremony, where he helped celebrate eighth-grade scholar athletes as they prepared to begin high school. He congratulated graduates from the podium and presented them with special jerseys, recognizing their academic achievements and the dedication that brought them to this important milestone.
Nasim also participated in the Nationals' Negro Leagues Night, joining scholar athletes on the field at Nationals Park to honor the players who broke barriers and helped shape the game of baseball. By celebrating this legacy while supporting the continued growth of youth baseball through Academy programs, he reinforces the importance of history, opportunity and representation in the sport.
This season, Nasim expanded his support of young athletes, including many who are part of Academy programs, by engaging with the District of Columbia Interscholastic Athletics Association (DCIAA). On multiple occasions he has met with groups of baseball and softball players, answering their questions, sharing valuable advice and inspiring them through his experiences and encouragement.
What makes Nasim's impact especially meaningful is the authenticity of his connection to the youth he serves. He understands firsthand how access to developmental opportunities, mentorship and support can influence a young person's future because those resources played an important role in his own journey to the Major Leagues. He has also spoken openly about the value of personal growth and mental wellness, emphasizing the importance of developing not only as an athlete but as a person. By sharing those experiences and investing in the next generation, he helps Nationals Academy scholar athletes envision possibilities for themselves both on and off the field, while reinforcing the value of perseverance, education, character and self-confidence.
Whether celebrating academic milestones, mentoring young athletes, supporting community events or helping grow the game of baseball, Nasim Nuñez consistently demonstrates humility, leadership and a sincere commitment to others. Through his engagement with the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy and the broader Washington, D.C. community, he embodies the spirit of service, compassion and empowerment that defines the Roberto Clemente Award.
