June 8: OF/INF Kiké Hernández (right hip flexor strain) placed on 10-day injured list
Prior to Wednesday's game against the Angels, the Red Sox shut down their leadoff man and starting center fielder due to an injury that has been nagging him for a while. The hope is it doesn't linger for too long and that Hernández can return when he's first eligible, which is June 18, when the Red Sox are in the middle of a home series against the Cardinals. Hernández hasn't been able to get hot for a sustained stretch this season. He has a line of .209/.273/.340 with four homers and 24 RBIs. -- Ian Browne
June 8: INF Jonathan Araúz recalled from Triple-A Worcester
Some were surprised that the Sox didn't call up speedy center fielder Jarren Duran to replace Kiké Hernández on the roster. The reason? Manager Alex Cora said the club is in a stretch in which he wants to get his starting infielders some days off. The Red Sox also face lefties in three of their next five games. Enter Araúz, a switch-hitter who can play all over the infield. The 23-year-old has appeared in five games with the Red Sox this season, going 0-for-7 with an RBI and a run scored. In 24 games with Worcester, he is batting .185 (17-for-92) with five doubles and has made 15 starts at second base and seven at shortstop. -- Ian Browne
June 8: SS Xander Bogaerts (left shoulder) makes swift return to lineup
A day after Bogaerts exited in the ninth inning of Boston's 6-5 victory over the Angels with left shoulder tightness, he returned for Wednesday night's third game of a four-game series. However, manager Alex Cora said that Bogaerts would likely get a day off on Thursday, which had already been scheduled before the shortstop's latest ailment. With Rafael Devers getting a rest on Wednesday, the speedy return of Bogaerts was well-timed. -- Ian Browne
INJURY UPDATES
10-day and 15-day IL
OF Kiké Hernández (right hip flexor strain)
Expected return: June 18 at earliest
Though Hernández's injury has been nagging him for weeks, Cora thinks his leadoff man and starting center fielder can make a speedy recovery and be back right around the time he is first eligible to be activated. -- Ian Browne (Last updated: June 8)
RHP Hansel Robles (back spasms)
Expected return: June 9
Robles rejoined the club in Anaheim on Wednesday and should be activated when he is first eligible for Thursday's series finale. This is good news for the Red Sox as Robles is one of the pitchers manager Alex Cora trusts most in the late innings. Robles was scheduled to make one Minor League rehab appearance for Triple-A Worcester on June 7, but it was rained out. In 16 games for Boston this season, Robles has a 2.65 ERA. -- Ian Browne (Last updated: June 8)
RHP Matt Barnes (right shoulder inflammation)
Expected return: June 15, at earliest
Barnes felt discomfort in his shoulder while warming up on May 30 and was placed on the injured list the next day. The right-hander had an MRI on June 2, and manager Alex Cora said it showed some fluid in his shoulder. Cora said the team remains hopeful that Barnes will miss the minimum time and return to the club on June 15. -- Sonja Chen (Last updated: June 4)
60-day IL
LHP Chris Sale (stress fracture, right rib cage)
Expected return: Possibly July
Sale threw his latest bullpen session on June 8, one day later than scheduled due to a stomach bug. All went well. Sale will throw one more bullpen session later this week and if that goes fine, he'll graduate to live batting practice. He might not be far from a Minor League rehab assignment. -- Ian Browne (Last updated: June 8)
LHP James Paxton (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: July or August
Paxton, whose return from Tommy John surgery was delayed due to posterior left elbow soreness, is starting to turn a corner. Cora said the lefty will likely throw a bullpen session during the series in Seattle (June 10-12). -- Ian Browne (Last updated: June 8)
LHP Josh Taylor (lower back strain)
Expected return: Late June or early July
There have been a lot of starts and stops for Taylor in his battle back from a back injury, but the lefty is making good progress again. Taylor, Boston's best left-on-left pitcher last season, has thrown off the mound multiple times in recent days and might not be far off from restarting his rehab assignment. Taylor's next bullpen session is scheduled for June 10 and he is projected to throw live batting practice next week. -- Ian Browne (Last updated: June 8)
Other
LHP Darwinzon Hernandez (right knee surgery)
Expected return: TBD
The lefty reliever, who had been pitching at Triple-A Worcester to work on some specific mechanical issues, underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus on May 19 and was placed on the Minor League IL. The Red Sox didn’t offer a specific timetable for his return, but a source told MLB.com the hope is that Hernandez can be pitching within a couple of months.
“I don’t know about the timetable and all that; hopefully he’ll be back soon,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora.
Hernandez pitched in 84 games for the Red Sox from 2019-21, posting a 3.66 ERA with 65 walks and 124 strikeouts in 78 2/3 innings. The plan was for Hernandez to work on his command issues at Triple-A, and that had been going well until the health roadblock.
“Talking to [Worcester pitching coach] Paul Abbott, his last one was his best one as far as repeating [his delivery],” said Cora. “Forget about the results -- as far as repeating his delivery and getting where we wanted him to get. The fastball, the last two or three, it was on point. Like I said [May 18], he was taking the work that he was doing on the side in between starts to the game. It sucks for the kid, but we know he’s going to bounce back, and he’s going to be OK.” -- Ian Browne (Last updated: May 19)
