Fielding Run Value

Definition

Fielding Run Value (FRV) combines all of Statcast's individual defensive metrics into one stat that measures a player's overall defensive value.

The Fielding Run Value leaderboard is available on Baseball Savant for all seasons 2018-present.

FRV is measured on a run-base scale -- it shows the runs a player saves from his defense, compared to an average player. A positive Fielding Run Value reflects above-average defensive performance, while a negative Fielding Run Value reflects below-average defensive performance.

Since Statcast uses different scales for different individual areas of defensive performance -- range, throwing, framing, blocking, double plays, etc. -- the conversion to one, run-based scale is necessary to place all performance on the same level. This allows defenders of all positions to be compared to one another.

Currently, the conversions for those metrics are as follows:

The 2025 season provides an excellent example as the top five overall fielders in MLB include all three main categories of fielder: catcher, outfielders and infielder. This allows us to explain the Fielding Run Value breakdown.

  • Patrick Bailey (catcher): +31 FRV // +25 runs from framing, +5 runs from throwing, +1 run from blocking
  • Pete Crow-Armstrong (center fielder): +21 FRV // +19 runs from range (Outs Above Average), +3 runs from arm value
  • Bobby Witt Jr. (shortstop): +20 FRV // +18 runs from Range (OAA), +0 runs from arm value, +2 runs from double plays
