CHICAGO – Braden Montgomery’s first career Major League game ended with a bang, as he launched a two-out opposite-field walk-off home run off Raisel Iglesias for a 6-5 victory in 10 innings. It was his second hit of the night.
The White Sox moved within a half-game of Cleveland for the American League Central lead and at 35-31, they are actually one up in the loss column. Tuesday’s victory improved the White Sox to 17-3 in their last 20 games at home.
Montgomery became just the fifth player in MLB history with a walk-off homer in his debut, joining Carlos Perez (2015), Miguel Cabrera (2003), Josh Bard (2002) and Billy Parker (1971), per the Elias Sports Bureau.
Atlanta jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first on Matt Olson’s two-run homer off opener Brandon Eisert. It was one of two homers hit by Olson, who just missed a third one hauled in near the center-field wall by Tristan Peters.
That lead grew to 4-0 in the third, and the first two hitters for the White Sox were retired on three pitches from Grant Holmes in the bottom of the frame. But Sam Antonacci worked a walk and Miguel Vargas followed with a two-run homer, cutting the lead in half on his 16th of the season.
Montgomery singled home a run in the fourth for his first hit and RBI. Jacob Gonzalez, another of the 12 White Sox players to make their Major League debuts in 2026, tied the game with a single in the seventh.
