Octavio Antonio Fernandez
**COACHING BACKGROUND** Tony Fernandez is in his second season with the Texas organization after being hired just prior to spring training in 2012. A five-time All-Star and winner of four consecutive Gold Glove Awards (1986-89), Fernandez had a 17-year major league career with Toronto (1983-90, 1993, 1998-99, 2001), San Diego (1991-92), New York-NL (1993), Cincinnati (1994), New York-AL (1995), Cleveland (1997), and Milwaukee (2001). He had a .288 average in 2158 major league games, compiling 2276 career hits. He played in the postseason for five different clubs, including the Blue Jays' 1993 World Championship squad. Fernandez had a career .327 average in 43 postseason games, including a .395 mark with 13 RBI in 11 World Series contests. Primarily a shortstop throughout his career, his .979 fielding percentage at the position ranks sixth all-time among players with at least 1000 games there, just ahead of Cal Ripken Jr. He led A.L. shortstops in fielding percentage twice in his career, and is among a small group of players honored on the Blue Jays' "Level of Excellence". Since his playing days ended, Fernandez has earned several degrees in ministry school and is an ordained minister. He assists in running the operations of the Tony Fernandez Foundation, a non-profit organization with offices in Canada, the U.S., and Dominican Republic that helps people in need all over the world. Fernandez and his wife, Clara, have five children: Joel, Jonathan, Abraham, Andres, and Jasmine.
