Turnpike Stadium was built in 1965 for the Minor League baseball Texas League team, the Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs. It was named that since it was near the Dallas-Fort Worth Turnpike, now known as Tom Landry Highway (I-30). When the Washington Senators moved to Arlington in 1972, the stadium expanded to a little over 35,000 seats, fit to what were MLB standards at the time, and had its name changed to Arlington Stadium, introducing the Texas Rangers to the nation as DFW’s major league baseball club. The Rangers would play there until 1993. Arlington Stadium was demolished later that year.

The Washington Senators, established in 1961, announced their intentions to move to the Metroplex as the Texas Rangers in 1971. The Rangers have had three ballpark homes since that time.

Construction on what was then called “The Ballpark in Arlington” began on April 2, 1992 and took 23 months, with a cost of $191 million. Opening day was April 11, 1994 between the Texas Rangers and the Milwaukee Brewers, and featured the largest crowd in team history with 46,056 fans. The current attendance record was set on October 30, 2010 when 52,419 fans watched Game 3 of the 2010 World Series against the San Francisco Giants.

The official groundbreaking for Globe Life Field took place on September 28, 2017 with construction beginning the following week. The 1.8 million square foot ballpark, which is located on 13 acres just south of Globe Life Park in Arlington, features a retractable roof for climate control and shelter for fans during the hot summer months. Seating capacity is 40,518. Globe Life Field officially opened in 2020.
