Major League Medical Services Coordinator
Dr. Brian Mahaffey has been a member of the St. Louis Cardinals medical staff as a Team Physician for 22 years. He now serves the Cardinals organization as the Director of Sports Medicine. Prior to coming to St. Louis in 2013, he served as Team Physician with the Springfield Cardinals (Double AA affiliate) in Springfield for 9 years.
Dr. Mahaffey is Medical Director of Mercy Sports Medicine and is with Mercy Clinic Sports Medicine. He helped develop a regionally known sports medicine program in Springfield, from the foundation laid prior to his arrival. He served as Head Physician for the Missouri State University athletics program for 16 years. He served as Head Team Physician for Lindenwood University, as Mercy established their partnership in 2023, until 2025, and still serves as a Team Physician. He was the Medical Director for the Missouri State University Athletic Training and Sports Medicine academic program and currently serves in the same role for the Lindenwood University academic program.
Dr. Mahaffey's interest in baseball is life long. He attended Missouri State University, where he played baseball while earning a BS in biology. He was named the Conference Co-Player of the Year in 1988 and graduated with 10 annual and career records. He was a three-time Academic All-American. In 2005, he was inducted into the MSU Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2014, into the first class of MSU's Academic Hall of Fame for Athletics. In 2018, Dr. Mahaffey was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Also, induction into the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame occurred in 2022. Earlier this year, as director, he was proud for the induction of the Mercy Sports Medicine Athletic Training Program into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. This summer, he will be inducted into the Missouri State Sports Medicine Hall of Fame.
Dr. Mahaffey graduated from the University of Missouri - Columbia School of Medicine in 1993, holds a Master of Science in Public Health from MU, completed a residency in family and community medicine at MU, a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Academic Medicine at MU, and earned a Primary Care Sports Medicine Certificate of Qualifications.
Originally from Springfield, Dr. Mahaffey and his wife, Sandra, live in St. Charles. They are proud parents of two daughters: Lauren and Samantha.
