LATEST NEWS
June 5: Clevinger activated; Rooker optioned
Right-hander Mike Clevinger was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start against the Brewers. Clevinger was placed on the IL on May 22 with a right triceps strain. The move was mostly a precautionary measure, as he just returned from Tommy John surgery.
In a corresponding move, the Padres optioned outfielder Brent Rooker back to Triple-A El Paso. Rooker, who was called up on June 3 after Wil Myers went on the IL, did not appear in any games. -- Joey Pollizze
June 4: Tatis continues to participate in baseball activities
Fernando Tatis Jr. was fielding ground balls during his pregame workout Saturday in Milwaukee and is doing everything he can to stay in baseball shape while his left wrist fracture heels. But the shortstop still hasn’t been cleared to swing a bat -- the final step of his progression. Manager Bob Melvin hopes that Tatis will be cleared to swing sometime next week. -- Joey Pollizze
INJURY UPDATES
10-day and 15-day injured lists
RF Wil Myers (right knee inflammation)
Expected return: TBD
Myers will be shut down from baseball activities for the next couple of days as his knee progresses. He received a silicone injection on June 1, hoping to avoid the IL, but suffered a setback and will be out until at least June 10.
“I really thought we were getting into a good place,” manager Bob Melvin said. “But the better it felt and the more work he was trying to do to get ready, he just had a setback. This is something that got worse after it felt like it was getting better.” -- Joey Pollizze (Last updated: June 3)
OF Matt Beaty (left shoulder impingement)
Expected return: June, potentially
Beaty injured his shoulder while making a diving attempt at a fly ball in a game against the Marlins on May 7.
The Padres have temporarily shut down Beaty’s rehab assignment, and he was sent to the team’s training facility in Arizona.
“We shut him down for a few days, the shoulder thing wasn't completely healed,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said. “He had some at-bats in Triple-A but started feeling it again.” -- Joe Harris (Last updated: May 31)
60-day IL
SS Fernando Tatis Jr. (left wrist fracture)
Expected return: June
Tatis is with the team on its road trip through St. Louis and Milwaukee and is participating in fielding and conditioning work but still isn’t cleared for hitting activities. Tatis underwent surgery to repair the scaphoid bone in his left wrist March 16. Tatis is eligible to return from the IL in early June, but everything is in a holding pattern until he gets clearance to swing a bat from the doctors. “It’s just once he gets a bat in his hand and starts swinging. Hopefully, that’s when we get home,” manager Bob Melvin said. -- Joey Pollizze (Last updated: June 4)
LHP Drew Pomeranz (flexor tendon surgery)
Expected return: June
Pomeranz is now throwing bullpens at 75% to 80%. Padres manager Bob Melvin is optimistic about his progress but is leery of pushing him too fast. “So really not sure until he throws 100%. I know he’s going to get back out there, it's really good to have him back, but you don’t want to push that because he’s had some injuries in the past too,” Melvin said. Last August, Pomeranz's season came to an early end when he underwent surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his pitching arm. He's hopeful that the surgery will permanently fix an issue he says he's been dealing with for the past five seasons. -- Joe Harris (Last updated: May 30)
RHP Pierce Johnson (right elbow tendinitis)
Expected return: Late June, potentially
Johnson, one of the more valuable setup weapons in the Padres bullpen, landed on the IL in late April with right elbow tendinitis, and he has yet to resume throwing. The Padres don't have a specific timetable for Johnson's return, but he could resume throwing in early June. Johnson will need a ramp-up period on the mound before he returns. -- AJ Cassavell (Last updated: May 29)
RHP Michel Baez (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: Midseason
Baez, who underwent surgery in April 2021, pitched two perfect innings for Single-A Lake Elsinore in his first rehab start on April 30. He could be a useful midseason addition as a hard-throwing righty capable of covering multiple innings. Baez owns a 3.67 ERA in 27 career big league appearances. -- AJ Cassavell (Last updated: May 1)
RHP Austin Adams (right forearm strain)
Expected return: June or July
Adams exited the Padres' loss to the Giants on April 12 after experiencing tightness in his right forearm. In the following days, Adams underwent an MRI and was evaluated by doctors. After the team offered a diagnosis of a right forearm strain, Padres manager Bob Melvin noted that Adams would be shut down for at least six weeks. Adams will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection to augment recovery and likely won't resume throwing until late May, at the earliest. -- AJ Cassavell (Last updated: April 18)
LHP Adrian Morejon (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: Midseason
Even after he was placed on the 60-day injured list, the Padres remain optimistic that Morejon will play a key role in their pitching plans this season. The left-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2021, but he's throwing regular bullpen sessions in Spring Training. A one-time top prospect, Morejon has only appeared in 16 games in the big leagues since his 2019 debut. -- AJ Cassavell (Last updated: March 17)
