July 13, 1896

1B Ed Delahanty becomes the first Phillie to hit four home runs in a game, but the Phillies lose, 9-8, at Chicago.

July 13, 1900

3B Harry Wolverton triples three times in a 23-8 win at Pittsburgh, a club and modern major league record which still stands.

July 13, 1915

The Phillies beat the visiting Cardinals, 8-0, to take over the National League lead, which they will hold for the remainder of the season. Grover Cleveland Alexander wins his ninth game in a row, his second-longest winning streak with the Phillies.

July 13, 1943

Philadelphia hosts its first Midsummer Classic, a 5-3 AL win at Shibe Park. It is the first scheduled night game in All-Star history and is broadcast via shortwave radio to American servicemen around the world.

July 13, 1976

The last section of Connie Mack Stadium is demolished as Veterans Stadium hosts its first All-Star Game, a 7-1 NL victory before 63,974 fans, including President Gerald Ford. LF Greg Luzinski is the leading vote-getter among NL outfielders, and he’s joined on the NL roster by four teammates, Bob Boone, Larry Bowa, Dave Cash and Mike Schmidt.

Managing in his second consecutive All-Star Game, Charlie Manuel guides the National League to a 3-1 win at Angel Stadium, ending the American League’s 13-year unbeaten streak.

July 13, 2021

With a solo shot in the fifth inning, J.T. Realmuto becomes the fifth Phillie to homer in the All-Star Game, joining Mike Schmidt (1981), Greg Luzinski (1977), Dick Allen (1967) and Johnny Callison (1964).

The Phillies defeat the Oakland A’s, 11-5, and set a franchise record with 62 wins before the All-Star break.

July 14, 1986

Garry Maddox becomes the second Phillie to win the Roberto Clemente Award, given annually to a player who best exemplifies good citizenship on and off the field.

July 14, 2009

Charlie Manuel is the manager, and the Phillies tie a club record with five players on the National League roster—Ryan Howard, Raul Ibañez, Chase Utley, Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth—for the All-Star Game at Busch Stadium, won by the American League, 4-3.

July 15, 1968

The Phillies complete the best road trip in franchise history, going 7-0 against the Pirates and Mets, including two doubleheader sweeps.

July 15, 2009

The Phillies sign future Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez, who will go on to post a 5-1 record with a 3.63 ERA in nine starts.

July 15, 2025

In the first ever swing-off to decide the All-Star Game, Kyle Schwarber belts three home runs on three swings to secure the win for the National League at Atlanta’s Truist Park. He becomes just the second Phillie to be named MVP of the Midsummer Classic, joining Johnny Callison, who earned the honors in 1964.

July 16, 2009

Playing in his 658th career game, Ryan Howard becomes the fastest player in major league history to hit 200 home runs with a solo shot off Marlins pitcher Chris Volstad. He breaks the previous mark held by Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner, who accomplished the feat in 706 games.

July 16, 1952

RHP Robin Roberts wins in Pittsburgh, 8-7. Of his 28 victories that year, it is the only one in which he does not go the distance, as RHP Andy Hansen comes on to get the final two outs.

July 16, 2024

The Phillies set a franchise record with eight All-Star selections—Alec Bohm, Bryce Harper, Jeff Hoffman, Cristopher Sánchez, Matt Strahm, Ranger Suárez, Trea Turner and Zack Wheeler—and the five pitchers selected set a major league record. Bohm, Harper and Turner start in the infield and each record a hit, while Strahm, Sánchez and Hoffman all make scoreless appearances out of the bullpen for the National League at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

July 17, 1918

Chicago wins at home, 2-1, in 21 innings, the longest game in Phillies history. Both pitchers go the distance, winner George “Lefty” Tyler (21 IP, 13 H, 1 BB, 8 SO) and loser Milt “Mule” Watson (20 IP, 19 H, 4 BB, 5 SO).

July 17, 1979

At Seattle’s Kingdome, the Phillies tie a club record with five players on the National League’s All-Star roster. Mike Schmidt, Bob Boone, Larry Bowa and Steve Carlton are in the starting lineup, and Pete Rose enters the game in the sixth inning as a pinch-hitter and plays first base, his fifth different All-Star position, a new record.

July 17, 1988

1B Ricky Jordan homers in his first major league at-bat during a 10-4 win over Houston at Veterans Stadium.

RHP Joe Blanton is acquired from Oakland for 2B Adrian Cardenas, LHP Josh Outman and OF Matt Spencer.

July 18, 1966

Gene Mauch becomes the first Phillies manager of the 20th century to win 500 games with a 4-0 victory over Los Angeles at Connie Mack Stadium.

July 18, 1983

For the second time since becoming GM, Paul Owens goes from the front office to the dugout to manage the Phillies. This time he replaces Pat Corrales with the Phils (43-42) in a tie for first place with St. Louis.

July 19, 1977

Greg Luzinski starts in left field for the National League and belts a two-run homer in the first inning that helps lift the NL to a 7-5 win in the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium.

July 19, 2022

Bryce Harper becomes the National League’s first-ever fan-elected designated hitter in the All-Star Game, but he doesn’t play due to injury in the American League’s 3-2 win at Dodger Stadium.

July 20, 1912

In a 14-2 win over the Cubs in Chicago, LF Sherry Magee becomes the only Phillie to steal home twice in a game.

July 20, 1969

In the top of the third inning of the nightcap against the Cubs at Connie Mack Stadium, play is halted as the crowd is informed that word has been sent from Neil Armstrong to Mission Control in Houston that the Eagle has landed on the moon. The game resumes after a recording of Kate Smith’s rendition of “God Bless America” is played and a prayer is said for the astronauts over the loudspeaker.

1B Rhys Hoskins becomes just the seventh player in major league history and first Phillie with 300 runs scored, 300 walks and 300 RBI in 500 career games or fewer, joining Aaron Judge, Frank Thomas, Eddie Mathews, Ralph Kiner, Charlie Keller and Ted Williams.

July 21, 1892

In a matchup of 300-game winners at Baker Bowl, Phillies submariner Tim Keefe defeats Jim “Pud” Galvin and the St. Louis Browns, 2-0. It will be 113 years until two National League pitchers with 300 or more victories face off again in the same game, when the Cubs’ Greg Maddux beats the Astros’ Roger Clemens on April 29, 2005, at Minute Maid Park.

LHP Doc White becomes the first Phillies pitcher to record four strikeouts in an inning during a 10-1 loss to Brooklyn.

July 21, 1973

LF Hank Aaron hits his 700th home run off LHP Ken Brett, but the Phils top the Braves, 8-4, in Atlanta.

July 21, 1997

After 17 years with the organization, C Darren Daulton is traded to the Florida Marlins for OF Billy McMillon.

July 21, 2012

The Phillies fall to the Giants, 6-5, in 10 innings before 45,989 fans, the largest regular season crowd in Citizens Bank Park history.

July 21, 2015

RHP Aaron Nola makes his major league debut, giving up just one run with six strikeouts over 6.0 innings in a 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay at Citizens Bank Park. He is the first player drafted by the Phillies to make his debut the following season since LHP Pat Combs in 1989.

The Phillies top the Boston Red Sox, 3-2, in 10 innings, scoring the winning run without putting a single ball in play – ghost runner, walk, wild pitch, intentional walk, catcher’s interference. It is the second time in the Live Ball Era (since 1920) that a major league game ends on catcher’s interference.

July 22, 1930

RHP Phil Collins becomes the second pitcher in franchise history to hit two home runs in a game as he improves to 10-3 with an 11-5 win over the Pirates at Baker Bowl.

July 22, 1958

Eddie Sawyer, skipper of the 1950 NL champs, returns to the Phillies to replace Mayo Smith as manager.

July 22, 1966

Clay Dalrymple breaks up Gaylord Perry’s no-hitter with an eighth-inning single. It marks the second time the Phillies catcher has spoiled a no-hit bid in the eighth inning at Candlestick Park, as he collected the only hit in Juan Marichal’s major league debut on July 19, 1960.

July 23, 1962

RF Johnny Callison’s third-inning single at Wrigley Field is the first hit seen live by television audiences in Europe, thanks to a transatlantic broadcast via the Telstar satellite, which had been launched two weeks earlier.

Steve Carlton becomes the 78th pitcher in MLB history to win 200 games in a 13-2 victory over the Houston Astros at Veterans Stadium.

The Phillies homer five times, including the 350th of Bryce Harper’s career, but lose a wild one to the Boston Red Sox in extra innings, 9-8.

July 24, 1995

The Phillies drop an 11-3 decision to the Colorado Rockies despite Omar Olivares’ pinch-hit home run, the first by a Phillies pitcher since Schoolboy Rowe in 1943.

July 24, 1998

The Phillies sweep a doubleheader against Florida, winning both games in the 12th inning, 6-4 and 7-6, as Mark Parent catches all 24 innings. No. 1 draft pick Pat Burrell agrees to terms on a five-year contract.

SS Tomas Perez becomes the second Phillie in club history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game in a 10-2 win over Montreal.

RHP Brett Myers earns the win in his major league debut, allowing just one run on two hits with five strikeouts over 8.0 innings in a 4-2 decision over the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

With a grand slam and sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth, right fielder Bobby Abreu ties a club record for RBI in an inning during a 14-6 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Phillies begin a condensed, 60-game season with a 5-2 loss to the Marlins at an empty Citizens Bank Park. It is the latest Opening Day in franchise history.

Beloved former Phillies executive David Montgomery is posthumously honored in Cooperstown with the Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award, given to an individual whose efforts broadened the game’s appeal and whose character, integrity and dignity is comparable to that of the award’s namesake.

Fittingly, Kyle Schwarber records his 1,000th career hit with his 319th career home run, a two-run shot in the fifth inning of a 12-5 win at Yankee Stadium. His 319 homers are the most through a player’s first 1,000 hits in MLB history.

RHP Robin Roberts (7/25 at STL), LHP Ken Johnson (7/26 at STL), RHP Bubba Church (7/27 at CHI) and RHP Russ Meyer (7/28 at CHI) set a club record with four consecutive shutouts.

3B Mike Schmidt hits his 260th home run to break Del Ennis’ club record and RHP Dick Ruthven ties a Vet record by pitching 12 innings in a complete-game, 5-4 win over Atlanta.

July 25, 2015

LHP Cole Hamels pitches the 13th no-hitter in franchise history, blanking the Cubs, 5-0, at Wrigley Field. He walks two and strikes out 13 in what turns out to be his final start for the Phillies, as he is traded to Texas six days later. It also marks the fourth no-hitter caught by Carlos Ruiz, tying him with Jason Varitek for the most in major league history.

Starting at second base for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chase Utley plays his final game at Citizens Bank Park, a 7-3 Phillies win.

Eddie Sawyer is named skipper of the Phillies after four and a half seasons managing in the club’s minor league system.

July 26, 2008

PH Greg Dobbs hits a three-run homer vs. Atlanta at Citizens Bank Park, giving the Phillies a 10-9 win. It is his 20th pinch hit of the season, matching the club record set by Doc Miller in 1913.

July 26, 2018

The Phillies tie the club record with seven home runs in a 9-4 win over the Reds in Cincinnati. Carlos Santana hits one and Maikel Franco, Rhys Hoskins and Nick Williams have two each. LHP Ranger Suárez earns the win in his major league debut.
