The Yankees have again bestowed the annual Hispanic Heritage Month Community Achievement Awards to organizations making a profound difference throughout our surrounding communities. Recipients were highlighted on Yankees social media platforms and recognized in a pregame on-field ceremony prior to September 24th’s game vs. Chicago (AL). This year’s honorees were:
DREAM, South Bronx United, and the Little League Raiders. In addition, all honored guests enjoyed viewing the game in the Judge’s Chambers.
- DREAM (wearedream.org): Originally founded as Harlem RBI, DREAM serves in excess of 2,500 local youth, ages 5 to 21, providing them with access to positive educational, recreational and enrichment programs. Since 2005, 98 percent of DREAM’s seniors have graduated from high school and 95 percent have matriculated into college. DREAM Charter School is committed to ensuring their students, grades K-12, recognize their potential and realize their dreams.
- South Bronx United (southbronxunited.org): Since 2009, South Bronx United (SBU) has aimed to improve the educational and health outcomes for young people throughout the surrounding communities. SBU leverages soccer as a tool to engage youth in academics, college prep, mentoring, and health and wellness programming. It’s client base represents over 1,600 young people annually whose families gain access to immigration legal services and social work across a variety of fields. SBU also implements a workforce development fellowship that helps high school students, college students, and out-of-school youth, ages 16-24, build job skills and secure employment. Program participants take part in a six-month fellowship that includes weekly job skill workshops, on-the-job training, practical work experience, and job placement support – all integrated within SBU’s existing college access and career success programming.
- Little League Raiders: The Little League Raiders Baseball, Inc. uses baseball as a catalyst to encourage Bronx youth, ages 5 to 18, to participate in positive recreational and social outlets. The Raiders also provide free tutoring and counseling along with assisting with training for the G.E.D. exam.
